Flawed Design Conventions

Making a regular practice of regarding any given medium or environment as a new frontier rather than one fully explored, it becomes easier to be a real designer and to actually do our job.

Andy Rutledge has written this great article regarding some of the flaws in very popular website design layouts that some big names are using to their detriment.

In his article he examines "a couple of these inferior Web design conventions and exposes their flaws." and then suggests some alternatives and explains why they work better.

It is a very interesting and informative article that gives some strong arguments for and against the examples given which are mostly centered 3-column layouts and vertically oriented columns.

I have gotten so much out of this article myself that it has promted me to rethink recent developments of mine, as I feel I too have fallen into "standard practices" making my work harder and my layouts even harder on the eye.

An excellent read!
